A 29-year-old man was remanded into custody after displaying appalling behavior during islamophobic riots outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Newton Heath.
Lewis Whitworth, 29, was recorded laughing as missiles were hurled at police officers outside a hotel believed to accommodate asylum seekers in Newton Heath. This incident unfolded amidst a gathering of individuals who were partaking in a violent disorder, as presented in court.
Prosecutor Nicola Dunkerley described the scene, emphasizing the racial slurs that accompanied the chaos. Whitworth was notably identified as a participant in this disorderly conduct, which included vandalism against a bus.
In his defense, solicitor Matthew Wallace claimed that Whitworth, having consumed alcohol, perceived the events as entertaining. He stated that Whitworth was merely attempting to return home when he encountered the unfolding situation.
District Judge Jane Hamilton addressed Whitworth, highlighting the significant disruptions caused by such widespread disorder at the asylum seeker hotel. She noted the severe penalties imposed on others involved in similar disturbances, underscoring the negative impact on the community and law enforcement.
